Trying to rank a Google Business Profile without a verified address is a waste of time in almost every UK market. Google won’t show unverified businesses in the Map Pack.

Why Verification Matters

Google’s local algorithm only shows verified businesses in the Map Pack. An unverified GBP is essentially invisible to local searchers.

Verification Methods

  1. Postcard verification — Google sends a postcard with a PIN to your business address. Takes 5-14 days.

  2. Phone verification — Available for some businesses. Google calls your business phone with a PIN.

  3. Email verification — Available for some businesses. Google sends a PIN to your business email.

  4. Video verification — New method. Record a video of your business location and signage.

Service Area Businesses

If you’re a service-area business (plumber, electrician, etc.), you still need a verified address. You can hide it from public display, but Google needs to verify you exist at a real location.

Common Issues

  • Virtual offices don’t work. Google requires a physical address where you can receive mail.
  • PO boxes don’t work. Google specifically prohibits PO boxes.
  • Home addresses work — but you can hide them from public display.
