Localo analysed 16,098 Google Business Profiles position-by-position. The results cut through years of SEO guesswork. Here’s what actually matters — and what doesn’t.

The 8 Factors That Actually Rank

1. Review Count (Strongest Signal)

Median #1 profile: 79 reviews. Median #11+: 25 reviews.

The curve peaks at 201-500 reviews (73% top-3 rate), then flattens. Below 25 reviews, you’re mostly off page one.

Action: Get more reviews than every competitor in your area. Total count is what matters — not pace, not length.

2. Photos (Only Factor With No Ceiling)

Median #1: 44 photos. Median #11+: 21 photos.

Photos are the only factor still climbing at 500+ images (73.2% top-3 rate). They separate #1 from #2 more sharply than any other metric.

Action: Upload 40+ photos. This is something you control — no waiting on customers.

3. Business Description (Compounds With Reviews)

Worth +10.8pp at 10 reviews, +25.8pp at 200+ reviews. Without a description, reviews stop paying past ~50.

Action: Write one. Length doesn’t matter (100-200 chars performs same as 750). Just have one.

4. Additional Categories (6 Is the Number)

6 categories: 69.1% top-3 rate. Zero categories: 47.9%.

Action: Add 6 secondary categories. This takes 5 minutes and moves the needle.

5. Citations (Plateau at 21-27)

Median #1: 27 citations. Median #11+: 14 citations.

Payoff front-loads hard. Past 30 citations, you’re building for its own sake.

Action: Build to 21-27 citations on UK directories. Then stop and audit NAP consistency.

5 links: 68% top-3 rate. Beyond 5, flat.

Facebook first (+13.2pp), then YouTube (+10.1pp).

Action: Add Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn. Done.

7. Google Posts (Publishing at All Matters)

Publishing: 70.8% top-3 rate. Not publishing: 63.7%.

Content doesn’t matter — keywords, length, frequency all flat. Only total post count matters (10+ active posts = 73%).

Action: Publish regularly. Don’t obsess over optimisation.

8. Ratings (The 5.0 Paradox)

4.9 rating: 69.1% top-3 rate. Perfect 5.0: 53.6%.

Why? Perfect 5.0 usually means too few reviews. A 5.0 with 200+ reviews hits 76.8%.

Action: Don’t panic over one bad review. 4.5+ is fine.

The 6 Factors That Don’t Matter

Factor Why It’s Busted
Review velocity Pace doesn’t track with position — only total count does
Review length 16-word reviews rank same as 100-word
Reply rate Top profiles reply LESS (73.4% vs 76.7%)
Reply length ~42 words at every position
Description length 100-200 chars performs same as 750
Keywords in reviews Zero ranking impact

The Two Cliffs

Transition What Drops Impact
#3 → #4 Reviews -14, Photos -2 Leave local pack
#10 → #11+ Reviews -17, Photos -6, Address -7pp Leave page one

UK-Specific Context

These findings align with UK local search. The directories that matter most:

  • Yell — strongest UK citation
  • Checkatrade — reviews + citation combined
  • TrustATrader — trade-specific authority
  • Thomson Local — traditional but still indexed
  • Build UK — construction/trade focused

The Bottom Line

Reviews and photos are 5-10× more impactful than keyword optimisation. Focus there first.
